Uber, Waymo unveil autonomous ride-hailing services in Atlanta

Uber has launched autonomous ride-hailing services in Atlanta in partnership with Alphabet’s Waymo.

The service, which began on June 24, 2025, uses Waymo’s self-driving vehicles over a 65-square-mile area in the city.

This initiative marks the second city where Uber offers rides in Waymo’s autonomous vehicles. The first was Austin, Texas, where the service commenced in March.

The Atlanta fleet will initially consist of dozens of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, with plans to expand to hundreds in the future.

Riders booking a Waymo autonomous vehicle through the Uber app will pay rates comparable to UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric.

Tipping is not required for these trips, and the service in Atlanta is currently restricted to surface streets.

Additionally, Waymo plans to reintroduce autonomous testing in New York City and aims to launch self-driving services in Washington, D.C., next year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Uber’s strategic pivot from developer to platform showcases industry maturation

Uber’s current partnership with Waymo represents a dramatic shift from its earlier autonomous vehicle strategy, which ended after a fatal accident in 2018.

The 2018 crash investigation revealed serious safety issues, including software that couldn’t recognize jaywalking pedestrians and an “inadequate safety culture” where Uber lacked a formal safety plan or dedicated safety division1.

This pivot from in-house development to strategic partnerships aligns with broader industry consolidation, as companies recognize the immense technical challenges and capital requirements of developing self-driving technology.

The economics are compelling for this platform approach. Uber can integrate autonomous vehicles without the estimated $1-2 billion annual R&D costs that dedicated AV companies incur, while gaining access to Waymo’s technology that has been tested over 20 million miles2.

This business model evolution reflects a maturing industry where specialization and partnerships create more sustainable paths to market than vertical integration.
