Uber to expand food delivery to 7 more European countries
Uber plans to expand its food delivery services into seven additional European countries this year, according to the Financial Times.
The company intends to launch in markets including the Czech Republic, Greece, Romania, Austria, Denmark, Finland, and Norway.
The move aims to generate an estimated US$1 billion in gross bookings over the next three years.
This expansion follows Uber’s recent agreement to acquire the delivery division of Turkey’s Getir from Mubadala, an Emirati investor, as part of its broader growth strategy in the region.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Uber leans on delivery profits to expand in Europe
- Delivery now adds profit, so the European push comes from a stronger footing.
- Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) rose 53% year over year to $727 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, which gives more room to fund new market entries 1.
- Uber has already gained ground in Europe. Market share rose from 28% to 38% in the UK and from 10% to 26% in Germany between January 2022 and December 2025, according to YipitData (a firm that tracks consumer spending and market share using transaction data) 2.
- Uber aims to take on incumbents such as the DoorDash-owned Wolt, using its ride-hailing customer base to promote delivery 2.
European delivery shifts toward fewer, larger players
- Europe’s delivery market mixes fierce competition with thin profit margins, while consolidation speeds up across the region 23.
- Uber One membership plus cross-selling from ride-hailing raises pressure on Wolt and other large delivery groups 2.
- Consolidation also includes dealmaking. Uber has announced a plan to acquire Getir’s delivery division in Turkey from its Mubadala-controlled shareholder (Mubadala is a state-backed investment firm based in Abu Dhabi) 42.
- Across tech, mature platform companies use scale and cash generation to move into nearby categories, which squeezes more specialized rivals 1.
