Uber tests simplified app for older riders in two US cities

Uber Technologies has launched a simplified version of its rideshare app to enhance accessibility for older adults.

The new app, featuring larger text and fewer buttons, will be piloted in Phoenix and Orlando starting May 2, 2025 with plans for expansion to other cities soon.

The updated interface includes easier navigation to saved destinations.

While designed for older riders, the feature will be available to all users in pilot locations under accessibility settings.

Uber also added tools for caregivers to manage rides, but drivers and vehicles in the pilot meet standard requirements only.

The company will collect feedback to refine the service, as rival Lyft prepares a similar feature.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Addressing a significant transportation gap for an aging demographic

Uber’s simplified interface addresses a critical problem: over 20% of older Americans lack reliable transportation options, leading to increased isolation and negative health impacts 1.

Transportation barriers significantly affect the 80.8 million Americans projected to be 65+ by 2040, with approximately 24% lacking access to vehicles and 21% unable to drive 2.

This situation creates substantial market potential for rideshare companies, explaining the competitive development between Uber and Lyft for senior-friendly features.

Research shows that when seniors gain access to rideshare services, they experience measurable improvements in quality of life and social engagement, with one-third using rides for medical appointments and the majority for social activities 3.

The industry has recognized this opportunity, with studies identifying nearly 1,000 transportation services (917 non-profit and 11 for-profit) specifically targeting older adults in the United States 4.

2️⃣ Technology barriers have limited rideshare adoption among seniors

Uber’s simplified interface tackles a documented barrier: the complexity of rideshare apps has historically posed significant challenges for seniors who struggle with navigation and understanding multiple ride options 5.
