Uber in talks with new backers to fund robotaxi expansion
Uber is seeking funding from private equity firms and banks to expand its robotaxi operations.
The company currently offers robotaxi rides using Waymo vehicles in Austin and Atlanta, and announced a US$300 million partnership in July 2025 to deploy over 20,000 Lucid-made vehicles using Nuro’s self-driving technology over six years.
Uber is considering multiple business models, including fixed payments to partners, revenue sharing with fleet operators, and owning vehicles while licensing self-driving software.
Uber said it is using a modest portion of its around US$7 billion in annual cash flow to fund robotaxi deployment and might sell minority stakes in its own units to support expansion.
Analysts say that large-scale adoption of robotaxis could help reduce Uber’s reliance on human drivers and improve profitability.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Operational scale reveals stark differences in robotaxi readiness
While companies race to enter the robotaxi market, current deployments show dramatic disparities in actual capabilities and scale.
Waymo operates over 1,500 autonomous vehicles across 700+ square miles with 24/7 availability, while Tesla’s robotaxi service covers only 40 square miles with limited hours and just a handful of vehicles 1.
This gap becomes more significant when considering safety metrics. Waymo’s vehicles average 14,000 miles per disengagement compared to Tesla’s 500 miles, indicating vastly different technological maturity levels 2.
The operational differences help explain why Uber chose to partner with established players like Waymo rather than develop its own technology from scratch.
For a company seeking to raise funding for rapid expansion, partnering with proven operators provides immediate scale and reduces the technological risk that has challenged other market entrants.
2️⃣ Market projections clash with regulatory and legal realities
Despite ambitious growth forecasts—the U.S. robotaxi market is projected to grow at 74.6% annually through 2030 3—recent events highlight the gap between industry expectations and practical deployment challenges.
Tesla faces multiple shareholder lawsuits alleging securities fraud after its robotaxi launch included incidents of erratic driving and traffic violations, leading to a $68 billion market value loss 4.
