Uber seeks Hong Kong license under new ride-hailing law

Uber said on October 29 it had applied to Hong Kong’s Transport Department for a ride-hailing service license under the city’s new regulatory regime.

The application follows legislation that passed in Hong Kong that requires ride-hailing platforms to obtain government licenses to operate legally, bringing app-based services under a formal transport framework.

Uber said it submitted the required forms and documents after the government opened applications.

It also said it had expanded its support team to help drivers with training and exam preparation as they transition to the new rules.

Uber had previously faced a setback in court over its operations under Hong Kong’s earlier rules.

The new regime has also sparked debate over quotas for ride-hailing services.
