Uber reportedly to expand food delivery presence in Turkey
Uber has agreed on key terms to buy Getir‘s food delivery business and is seeking approval from Turkish regulators, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The deal would expand Uber Eats’ presence in Turkey and mark a further step in Mubadala’s exit from the Turkish market.
Turkey’s Competition Board is reviewing the proposal, but the sale price has not been disclosed and a final agreement is not certain.
Earlier this year, Mubadala sold Getir’s car rental unit to local firm Tiktak and has been exploring additional asset sales in Turkey.
Uber also announced plans in May to acquire a majority stake in Trendyol GO for US$700 million.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Uber’s move into Turkey targets consolidation in a market led by locals
- Local recall skews to homegrown apps. Yemeksepeti hits 79.1% and Getir reaches 71.9% among respondents, far ahead of global rivals in similar markets 1.
- Trendyol GO (the delivery arm of e-commerce marketplace Trendyol) gained steam in Q1 2024. Weekly active users reached about 2.3 million by early March 2.
- The company plans a majority stake in Trendyol GO and has agreed on terms to buy Getir Food, both awaiting regulatory approvals 3. It is buying position in a tough local ecosystem rather than building from scratch.
- Turkey’s Competition Board (the national antitrust regulator) has policed platform power, including a case against Yemeksepeti over alleged anti-competitive discounting 4. That raises the stakes for any deal review.
Restaurant tech could benefit from consolidation and commission pressure
- If Uber combines Trendyol GO’s users with Getir Food’s operations, restaurants could lose bargaining power as fewer big platforms remain.
- The Draft Digital Markets Act in Turkey adds data portability duties (letting users move their data between services) and limits tying (preventing platforms from forcing the use of one service to access another) for gatekeepers (dominant platforms that control access to users) 5.
- Vendors with POS links, order hubs, first-party ordering, or loyalty software may find buyers among the 50,000+ partner restaurants on Yemeksepeti alone 6, especially if commissions rise after deals close.
- The opportunity is about $5 billion for e-commerce food and grocery delivery in Turkey, with growth forecast through 2030 7.
