Uber relaunches ride-hailing in Macao after years
Uber has resumed its ride-hailing service in Macao, marking its first entry into an Asia-Pacific market in several years.
The company is recruiting drivers and offering bonuses for trips completed this month, though the initial number of taxis is unclear.
Riders can now book and pay for taxis in multiple languages, and Uber is also providing a limousine service between Macao and Hong Kong, which requires a 24-hour advance booking.
Uber previously operated there but suspended services in 2017.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Uber returns to Macao through the taxi system
- Uber is re-entering Macao by partnering with licensed taxis through “Uber Taxi.” Ride-hailing with private cars still breaks the law without a permit, which drove Uber to stop operating there in 2017 1.
- The Macao government plans to consult on changes to taxi rules. It then plans to start the legislative process next year to create conditions for ride-hailing services 2.
- Pressure is rising because the taxi fleet fell from roughly 1,900 vehicles in 2019 to around 1,460 today 2.
- AMap (Alibaba-backed mapping and mobility app popular in China) already runs an e-hailing taxi trial. Current laws ban platforms from adding service or platform fees, so the offering loses money for now 3.
- Uber’s results depend on new rules that allow a fee-based model.
Macao as a proving ground for Uber in tightly regulated Asian markets
- The re-entry leans on cooperation with regulators. It echoes Hong Kong, where Uber welcomed new licensing rules after years of backlash and legal enforcement actions 4.
- A legal presence helps Uber serve mainland Chinese tourists who expect smooth e-hailing. Macau’s transportation satisfaction has been cited as relatively low even as overall destination ratings stay strong 3.
- Starting with taxis also supports other services such as food delivery, since cross-platform users globally spend three times more 5.
- The CEO raised robotaxis (self-driving taxis). Uber said trip growth in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, where AVs (autonomous vehicles) were deployed, was more than twice the rest of the US 5.
