Uber plans $20b buyback after record Q2 earnings

Uber announced US$20 billion in new stock buybacks after reporting second-quarter results and a third-quarter forecast that surpassed analyst expectations.

The company said gross bookings for the third quarter are expected to reach US$48.3 billion to US$49.8 billion, higher than Wall Street’s projected US$47.6 billion.

Uber reported second-quarter gross bookings of US$46.8 billion, with growth in its delivery unit offsetting a slight miss in rideshare bookings.

Adjusted second-quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization reached a record US$2.1 billion, above analyst estimates.

Uber expects adjusted EBITDA for the third quarter to be between US$2.2 billion and US$2.3 billion.

Shares rose 4.9% in premarket trading following the announcement.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Uber’s massive buyback signals maturation in a historically volatile sector

The $20 billion stock buyback announcement represents a significant milestone for a company that has historically prioritized growth investments over returning cash to shareholders.

This buyback scale becomes more significant when viewed against broader corporate trends. For example, in 2018, U.S. companies announced $1.1 trillion in buybacks, with $800 billion actually executed1.

Uber’s ability to announce such a substantial program while maintaining aggressive growth targets suggests the rideshare industry has reached a level of cash generation stability that was uncertain just a few years ago.

The company generated record adjusted EBITDA of $2.12 billion in the second quarter while simultaneously investing hundreds of millions in autonomous vehicle partnerships2.

This dual approach of returning cash while investing in future technology indicates management’s confidence in sustaining current profitability levels even as they pursue potentially transformative but capital-intensive initiatives.

2️⃣ Cross-platform integration drives outsized subscriber value in competitive markets

Uber’s cross-selling success demonstrates how platform integration can create competitive advantages in fragmented markets.
