Uber capped employee spending on AI coding tools at US$1,500 a month for each tool after exhausting its AI budget earlier this year.

Introduced in recent months, the limit applies to coding tools including Cursor and Anthropic PBC’s Claude Code. Employees can track usage on an internal dashboard, and they can request approval to exceed the cap.

Uber executives said AI agents now build about 10% of the company’s committed code.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also said the legal and marketing teams are using the tools more. President and COO Andrew Macdonald said the link between rising use of tools such as Claude Code and gains in consumer-facing product features was not yet clear.

The cap also highlights pricing pressures around AI coding tools. Cursor’s Enterprise plan is custom, while third-party analysis said heavy users can incur daily overages beyond standard seat fees.

Uber’s move also fits a broader cost-control push. Microsoft began canceling licenses for most direct Claude Code users and shifting engineers toward GitHub Copilot’s command-line interface.
