Uber launches private car ride-sharing service in India
Uber has launched a ride-sharing service in Assam, India, allowing private car owners to operate as drivers through its app.
This marks Uber’s first effort in India to permit vehicles with white number plates to function as taxis.
During its initial rollout, the service will feature women and army veterans as drivers to promote inclusivity.
Uber aims to use this pilot project to incentivize other Indian states to allow private vehicles for shared rides.
This model, common in the US and UK, is new in India and faces resistance from unions and challenges in gaining approval in other states.
