Uber to add two engineering campuses in India by 2027
Uber said on May 14 it will expand in India with two engineering campuses in Bengaluru and Hyderabad for about 9,600 people by the end of 2027.
The company also said it plans to build its first local data center through a partnership with Indian conglomerate Adani Group due online in Q4 2026.
Uber has about 3,500 employees in India and said it is hiring for AI, machine learning, autonomous vehicle operations, and back-end infrastructure roles.
India is a major engineering base for tech firms and Uber invested US$330 million in its India unit earlier in 2026 as it looks beyond ride-hailing and competes with local player Rapido.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
India is a growing base for Uber’s AI and engineering work
- The hiring plan covers teams such as Applied AI. It works on generative AI and computer vision with Uber’s product and platform groups 1.
- Uber AI Solutions is one of the company’s biggest bets. The team is building a large data foundry for AI use cases 2.
- Autonomous vehicle operations roles include Hyderabad teams that run human-in-the-loop (HITL) annotation for machine learning and AI work. That includes 2D and 3D LiDAR (a laser-based sensing technology used to map surroundings) labeling to train models 3.
- The new data center adds to that global role. Uber plans to use it to build and scale technology for operations across its network 4.
The Adani deal hints at a new way to build tech infrastructure in India
- Uber chose Adani Group, an Indian conglomerate with businesses across infrastructure, energy, and logistics, for its India data center instead of building the site on its own. The source material does not say if Uber weighed global cloud providers 4.
- The partnership gives Uber access to land and power, which data center projects need in large amounts 4.
- Adani Enterprises is also building what has been described as India’s largest AI data center campus in Visakhapatnam through AdaniConneX. The project involves Google, Bharti Airtel, an Indian telecom operator, and other ecosystem partners, with an estimated US$15 billion investment from 2026 to 2030 4.
- The setup could guide multinationals that want local computing capacity as data localization rules and AI demand raise the need for in-country infrastructure 4.
