UAE startup funding hits $86.7m in May

The UAE is enhancing its position as a hub for startups with increased funding and a supportive business environment.

In May, startups in the MENA region raised US$289 million, a 25% increase from April.

The UAE contributed US$86.7 million across 14 deals, according to a report by Wamda.

The Dubai Future District Fund (DFDF) reported over US$1.65 billion in capital commitments last year, supporting more than 190 companies.

This development underscores the UAE’s focus on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through government-backed initiatives.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ UAE dominates MENA startup funding with strategic positioning

The UAE has established a significant influence in regional venture funding well beyond what might be expected from its population size alone.

The country accounts for 26% of all deals but captures 66% of all funding in the MENA region, showing its disproportionate attraction of larger investment rounds 1.

This dominance is evidenced by success stories like Careem (acquired for $3.1B by Uber), Souq.com (acquired for $580M by Amazon), and Noon.com (raised $1B in 2016) 12.

UAE startups are achieving exits at a rate 80% higher than other MENA countries, suggesting a more mature ecosystem for companies seeking liquidity events 3.

This funding concentration has accelerated in recent years, with the number of equity deals increasing nearly 200% between 2015 and 2018, showing a rapid evolution of the ecosystem 2.

2️⃣ Government’s ecosystem building includes specific long-term targets

The UAE’s startup support isn’t merely opportunistic but part of a structured long-term vision with quantifiable objectives.

The Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy has established concrete targets to double the digital economy’s GDP contribution from 9.7% to over 20% by 2031, with projections suggesting growth exceeding $140 billion 4.
