UAE set to launch its first regulated national stablecoin

The UAE is preparing to launch AE Coin, its first regulated national stablecoin, after receiving final approval from local authorities in December.

This initiative is part of the country’s broader Digital Dirham strategy, which aims to establish a framework for stablecoin operations.

AE Coin is expected to streamline remittances for UAE residents, with the country ranking among the top ten global sources of remittances.

The launch aligns with the growing global adoption of stablecoins, with countries like El Salvador, Australia, and Singapore already implementing similar frameworks.

In the UAE, stablecoins are increasingly used for small-scale investments, with 93% of transactions being retail-sized.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The UAE’s strategic positioning in the global stablecoin race

The UAE’s AE Coin launch is part of a broader global shift toward regulated stablecoins that’s accelerating in 2025, but with distinctive regional advantages.

While 70% of countries globally are undergoing significant regulatory changes for cryptocurrencies, the UAE is among the minority that have developed comprehensive frameworks covering taxation, anti-money laundering, and consumer protection1.

This positions the UAE differently from countries like El Salvador by leveraging its existing financial hub status, dollar-pegged currency, and established regulatory bodies like ADGM and VARA.

The UAE’s approach aligns with global trends where stablecoins have reached a market capitalization of approximately $208 billion in 2025, reflecting a 28.4% increase from the previous year according to data from Visa and Allium cited in the original article.

For UAE residents, this means access to a regulated stablecoin with potential government backing—a significant advantage over private stablecoins that may face regulatory uncertainty in other jurisdictions.

2️⃣ Stablecoins as transformative tools for UAE’s large expatriate community

The UAE’s position as one of the world’s top remittance senders makes its stablecoin strategy particularly consequential for its large migrant workforce.

Traditional remittance services typically charge between 2-3% in transaction fees and can take days to process, while stablecoin transactions require only a fraction of that cost and settle instantly2.
