UAE mandates AI curriculum in schools

The UAE Cabinet has approved a new curriculum that will make AI a mandatory subject in government schools.

This program will be implemented across all educational levels, from kindergarten to Grade 12, starting in the upcoming academic year.

This initiative is part of the UAE’s strategy to prepare future generations for a technologically advanced world.

The curriculum will provide students with knowledge about AI, including data, algorithms, and applications.

It will also cover ethical considerations and the societal impacts of AI.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The UAE’s approach leapfrogs global patterns in AI education integration

The UAE’s decision to make AI a mandatory subject represents a more comprehensive approach than seen in most countries globally.

While nations like Singapore and South Korea have integrated AI as tools within existing subjects through their “Smart Nation” and personalized learning strategies, they haven’t yet established dedicated AI curricula spanning all grade levels 1.

This positions the UAE as a pioneer in formal AI education, especially notable given that a recent national survey found only 27% of students and 9% of instructors regularly use generative AI tools in educational settings 2.

By teaching AI from kindergarten through high school, the UAE is implementing a more structured approach than countries like the UK, which leaves AI integration decisions to individual schools, or Australia, which has created frameworks but not mandatory curricula 3.

Sheikh Mohammed’s emphasis on teaching both technical understanding and ethical awareness aligns with global best practices identified by education researchers, addressing both opportunities and challenges of this technology.

2️⃣ The AI curriculum extends the UAE’s pattern of forward-looking educational reforms

This initiative continues the UAE’s well-documented history of educational transformation aimed at preparing students for future challenges.

Since formal education began in the UAE, the system has evolved from basic religious instruction in the 1920s to adopting regional curricula in the 1970s, developing its own curriculum in 1993, and now embracing emerging technologies 4.
