TSMC uses AI to boost chip energy efficiency
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) unveiled new strategies to improve the energy efficiency of AI computing chips at a Silicon Valley conference.
TSMC, which produces chips for Nvidia, said advances in chip design – using multiple smaller “chiplets” combined in a single package – could increase efficiency by up to 10x.
The company is also adopting AI-powered design tools from Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, which it said were able to outperform human engineers in some complex design tasks, and complete them faster.
TSMC said these AI tools can finish certain chip design processes in minutes, compared to days for human designers.
Nvidia’s flagship AI servers can use up to 1,200 watts during heavy workloads, equivalent to the continuous power consumption of 1,000 US homes.
Industry experts noted that current chip manufacturing faces limits in data transfer using electrical connections, and that new methods like optical connections must become more reliable to support large-scale data centers.
