TSMC speeds up Arizona expansion for US chip hub

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is accelerating its expansion in Arizona, building a major semiconductor hub in the US.

After launching its first fab in late 2024, which uses a 4nm process with yields similar to Taiwan’s, the company has completed a second fab using 3nm technology.

A third fab, now under construction, will adopt 2nm technology.

TSMC has invested US$65 billion in the three Arizona fabs and plans to invest an additional US$100 billion for three more fabs, two IC assembly plants, and an R&D center.

These Arizona facilities are expected to contribute 30% of TSMC’s advanced production.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ TSMC’s massive U.S. investment reverses decades of Taiwan-centric manufacturing

TSMC’s $165 billion Arizona investment represents one of the largest foreign investments in U.S. history and a dramatic strategic shift for the company1.

Since its founding in 1987, TSMC has maintained a predominantly Taiwan-focused manufacturing footprint, building its global foundry leadership position (49% market share) through concentrating advanced production at home23.

The Arizona expansion goes far beyond typical overseas operations, creating what Chairman Wei calls an “independent semiconductor cluster” that will provide approximately 30% of TSMC’s most advanced production capacity.

The shift is especially significant considering TSMC’s historical reluctance to distribute its most advanced manufacturing capabilities outside Taiwan, with the company only recently building smaller facilities in Japan and Germany.

This represents a fundamental evolution in TSMC’s global manufacturing strategy, moving from a Taiwan-hub model to a more distributed approach with multiple major production centers.

2️⃣ U.S. reshoring initiatives creating unprecedented semiconductor ecosystem expansion

TSMC’s accelerated Arizona build-out is part of a larger semiconductor manufacturing renaissance in the United States, with over $540 billion in supply chain investments announced since 20204.

The industry expansion extends far beyond TSMC, with Texas Instruments recently announcing a $60 billion investment across seven U.S. semiconductor fabs—the largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in U.S. history5.
