🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
TSMC’s record spending tracks its high-stakes bet on AI
- TSMC plans capital spending of up to US$56 billion in 2026, putting recent earnings back into expansion and scale 1.
- About 70% to 80% of the budget targets leading-edge manufacturing needed to produce the most advanced AI chips 1.
- Another 10% to 20% goes to advanced packaging, the process of combining and connecting chips so they can work together at high speed, plus related capabilities for high-performance computing systems 1.
- The 2026 plan rises from US$40.9 billion in 2025, signaling an accelerated push to stay ahead in process technology 1.
The AI boom contrasts with the downturn-era softness in the broader chip market
- TSMC’s AI-led momentum spreads across the tech supply chain, while the wider sector still carries signs of a two-speed recovery after the recent downturn 2.
- In Q1 2023, TSMC reported sequential revenue declines of 27% in smartphones and 14% in high-performance computing (HPC), citing weaker macroeconomic conditions and softer end-market demand 2.
- TSMC also said customers cut and shifted orders to work through excess chip inventory during that period 2.
- With growth now concentrated in AI, parts of the electronics industry risk heavier reliance on a single demand engine if AI spending cools.
