TSMC proposes joint venture to manage Intel foundry
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly approached US chip manufacturers Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Broadcom about creating a joint venture to operate Intel’s foundry division.
The proposal suggests that TSMC would manage the foundry’s operations, holding no more than a 50% stake to ensure the division remains majority-owned in the US.
Intel’s foundry division specializes in manufacturing chips customized to client specifications. Any agreement would need approval from the US government, as officials reportedly prefer Intel’s intellectual property and assets to stay predominantly under domestic control.
This initiative follows requests from the US government for TSMC’s help in improving Intel’s manufacturing capabilities.
Currently, these discussions are in preliminary stages, marking TSMC’s first specific approach to engaging other major semiconductor industry players.
