TSMC profit surges 61% on strong AI chip demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) reported a 61% jump in net income for the June quarter, reaching NT$398.3 billion (US$13.5 billion), beating analyst expectations.

The growth was driven by strong demand for advanced AI chips, with major orders from Nvidia and AMD.

Revenue rose 39% in the same period.

CEO C.C. Wei said AI-related orders remain strong, and TSMC expects sales to grow in the mid-20% range in US dollar terms by 2025.

TSMC’s revenue for the first half of 2025 rose by about 40%, despite the stronger Taiwanese dollar.

The company is investing heavily, including a US$100 billion expansion in Arizona and projects in Japan, Germany, and Taiwan, to meet rising demand for advanced chips.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI demand is reshaping TSMC’s financial profile at record pace

TSMC’s latest results reveal how profoundly AI is transforming the chipmaker’s business model and financial trajectory.

The company is projected to see its AI-related revenue more than triple from 2025 to 2027, with AI expected to grow from a small segment to approximately 30% of TSMC’s total revenue by decade’s end1.

This shift is enabling extraordinary financial performance, with profit margins hovering around 41.69%, significantly higher than industry averages and reflecting TSMC’s operational efficiency2.

TSMC’s premium pricing power is particularly evident in its advanced nodes, where it reportedly charges $30,000 per wafer for 2nm chips compared to $20,000 for 3nm chips, demonstrating how cutting-edge AI manufacturing commands substantial premiums1.

Major contracts for these advanced nodes are already lined up with AI leaders including AMD, Microsoft, and Amazon, ensuring a steady revenue pipeline despite the enormous capital expenditures required1.

2️⃣ Geopolitical tensions create uncertainty despite record AI investments

Despite TSMC’s $100 billion expansion in Arizona and additional investments in Japan and Germany, the semiconductor industry faces increasing headwinds from trade tensions.
