TSMC to mass-produce 1.4nm chips in 2028

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co plans to start mass producing 1.4-nanometer chips in 2028.

The move comes as demand rises for AI and high-performance computing chips.

TSMC is targeting mass production of 2-nanometer chips in the fourth quarter of 2026, with orders booked through 2028.

TSMC also plans trial production of 1-nanometer or smaller chips in 2029.

The company expects its A14 process to use up to 30% less power than 2-nanometer chips at the same performance level, with Apple among likely customers.

Yields for these leading edge processes will be a key factor in stable output, profitability, and competitiveness.

  • Intel has said it may drop its 1.4nm-class process, called 14A, if it cannot land a large outside customer 1.
  • Part of the strain comes from the price of High-NA EUV lithography tools (advanced chipmaking machines used to print extremely small circuit patterns), which cost about US$380 million each 1.
