TSMC market cap tops $1.7t on AI chip demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s (TSMC) American depositary receipts (ADRs) closed at a record US$1.7 trillion market capitalization on January 2, 2026, making it the sixth-largest company globally by market cap, according to CompaniesMarketCap.

TSMC, a major contract chipmaker based in Taiwan, now ranks ahead of Meta Platforms and Broadcom in market value.

The rise is linked to demand for AI-related chips and the company’s advanced manufacturing technologies.

Nvidia remains the leading semiconductor company by market cap at US$4.6 trillion, while Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon round out the top five.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Record market cap driven by AI node capacity, but 2026 supply bottlenecks remain

  • 7 nm and smaller nodes made up 74% of Q4 2024 wafer revenue 1. TSMC expects 2025 revenue to grow near the mid 30s percent in USD, led by AI GPUs and accelerators 2.
  • Global Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate packaging stays oversubscribed through at least 2026 3. TSMC may reach 120,000 to 130,000 CoWoS wafers per month by end 2026 4. Over 85% of TSMC’s 2026 CoWoS is already allocated 5. Nvidia seeks about 595,000 wafers industry-wide for 2026, with roughly 510,000 at TSMC 5. Broadcom is 150,000, while AMD is 105,000 5. New AI chip designers face tight supply, which may cap near term TSMC revenue.

Intel EMIB offers a capacity alternative to TSMC CoWoS for AI chip designers

  • Startups and midtier AI chip firms facing CoWoS limits can weigh Intel’s Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB) 5. EMIB supports 6x reticle now and 8 to 12x by 2026 to 2027 5. A reticle is the maximum single exposure area in lithography that defines die size. The simpler structure with higher yields suits application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and mid range accelerators where absolute bandwidth is not the limit 5.
  • Intel and Amkor are adding EMIB capacity in South Korea, Portugal, and Arizona for external foundry customers 5. Marvell, MediaTek, and Google plan EMIB use 5. EMIB and CoWoS will coexist, so early EMIB allocations could speed time to market versus waiting for scarce CoWoS slots through 2026.
