TSMC makes history with first 4nm chip made in US

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has started production of advanced four-nanometer chips at its Arizona facility, marking a milestone in the Biden administration’s semiconductor strategy, according to United States Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

Raimondo said this is the first time four-nanometer chips are being made on US soil, with production quality matching that in Taiwan.

This move is part of TSMC’s US expansion, which includes plans for a third semiconductor facility in Arizona by 2030 and a second facility producing two-nanometer chips by 2028.

The US government has supported TSMC’s expansion with a US$6.6 billion grant and low-interest loans.

TSMC plans to begin high-volume production by mid-2025, serving clients like Apple and Nvidia.
