TSMC expands 3nm chip production in Taiwan, US, Japan
TSMC said at an investor conference that it is expanding 3nm chip production in Taiwan, Arizona, and Kumamoto, Japan, to meet rising demand from AI, smartphones, automotive electronics, and IoT.
In Taiwan, the company is building new 3nm lines for mass production in H1 2027 and converting some 5nm capacity to 3nm.
Its second Arizona fab is set to start commercial production in H2 2027.
TSMC said its second Japan fab will use the 3nm process and begin commercial production in 2028.
Taiwan’s government has approved the new production plan there.

AI demand is changing TSMC’s spending and plans
- TSMC plans capital spending at the high end of US$52–56 billion in 2026 1.
- Most of that outlay ties to AI. The high-performance computing (HPC) segment, which includes AI-related chips plus other data-center processors, brought in 61% of TSMC’s Q1 2026 revenue 1.
- AI needs have also reshaped work outside the listed sites. TSMC will move its second Japan fab to 3nm from the originally planned 6–12nm processes, aiming to meet “soaring global demand for AI” 2.
Packaging is becoming the choke point for AI chips
