TSMC beats Q1 forecasts with $25.5b revenue

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) announced first-quarter revenue of NT$839.25 billion (US$25.5 billion) on Apr. 10, exceeding market expectations.

An LSEG SmartEstimate, based on forecasts from 19 analysts, projected revenue at NT$835.66 billion (US$25.15 billion) for the same period.

TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, continues to benefit from strong demand for chips used in AI applications.

The company serves major clients, including Apple and Nvidia.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ TSMC’s expanding market dominance reflects semiconductor industry power concentration

TSMC’s market-beating revenue comes amid its extraordinary dominance of the global foundry market, where it now controls 64.9% of worldwide semiconductor manufacturing capacity 1.

This represents a level of industry concentration rarely seen in high-tech manufacturing, with nearest competitor Samsung holding just 9.3% market share while Intel struggles to remain competitive in the foundry business 1.

TSMC’s growth is accelerating rather than plateauing, with the company reporting 32% year-over-year revenue increases through the first three quarters of 2024, demonstrating how AI demand is further entrenching its market position 2.

The company’s technical lead in advanced manufacturing nodes has created a cycle where companies needing cutting-edge chips have increasingly fewer alternatives, allowing TSMC to improve gross margins by 460 basis points to 57.8% despite massive capital expenditures 3.

This growing technical and market dominance helps explain why TSMC maintains a 40.54% profit margin and 30.04% return on equity despite operating in a traditionally cyclical and capital-intensive industry 4.

2️⃣ AI demand creates counter-cyclical growth surge amid broader industry slowdown

The semiconductor industry has historically followed pronounced boom-bust cycles, but AI is creating an unusual bifurcation where companies like TSMC see explosive growth while other segments struggle with inventory challenges 5.

This industry-wide transformation is reflected in projections showing AI chips representing over $150 billion of the expected $697 billion semiconductor market in 2025, creating a major growth engine within an otherwise moderating sector 6.

TSMC’s ability to capture this AI demand explains why 92% of semiconductor executives predict industry revenue growth in 2025 despite challenges in traditional markets like smartphones and consumer electronics 7.
