TSMC approves $15.2b for tech expansion

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the largest contract chipmaker globally, approved US$15.25 billion for capital expenditures to support long-term growth, the company announced on May 13, 2025.

The funds will be used for upgrades in advanced technology and packaging capacity, the expansion of mature and specialty technologies, and the construction of new fabrication facilities.

TSMC’s board also approved a cash dividend of NT$5 (US$0.155) per share, based on first-quarter earnings of NT$13.94 (US$0.432) per share.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Record capital expenditure reflects semiconductor industry’s unprecedented growth trajectory

TSMC’s $15.25 billion capital appropriation aligns with the semiconductor industry’s projected expansion to $697 billion in 2025, representing an 11% year-over-year increase1.

This investment comes as the industry is on track for a 7-9% compound annual growth rate through 2030, potentially reaching $1 trillion in global sales by the end of the decade2.

TSMC itself projects revenue growth of “close to mid-20s percent” in U.S. dollar terms for 2025, significantly outpacing the broader industry3.

The capital allocation demonstrates how leading semiconductor companies are aggressively expanding capacity despite the industry’s historical cyclicality, with data showing nine cycles of growth to shrinkage over the last 34 years1.

The company’s decision to simultaneously increase its quarterly dividend from NT$4.50 to NT$5.00 reflects strong cash flow generation, enabling TSMC to balance shareholder returns with substantial reinvestment.

2️⃣ AI acceleration drives demand for advanced manufacturing capacity

TSMC’s investment in “advanced technology and packaging capacity” directly responds to the exploding demand for AI chips, which is expected to exceed $150 billion in 2025 alone1.

The company’s advanced nodes already account for 22% of wafer revenue as of Q1 2025, highlighting the critical importance of cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities in TSMC’s growth strategy3.

Industry data shows that silicon wafer shipments are projected to grow by nearly 10% in 2025, primarily driven by components used in generative AI applications1.

This expansion occurs as major AI chip designers like Nvidia depend on TSMC’s manufacturing capabilities to meet market demand4.
