Tsinghua University unveils institute to advance robotics research
Tsinghua University in China has launched the Institute for Embodied Intelligence and Robotics to advance robotics research.
The institute aims to strengthen both robotics research and talent development in China.
The new institute brings together faculty from automation, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science departments.
It will be led by Zhang Tao, director of Tsinghua’s Department of Automation.
Embodied intelligence focuses on AI that interacts with the physical world and learns from real-world experiences.
This move follows similar initiatives at other Chinese universities, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University, which recently applied to add embodied intelligence as a new undergraduate course.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tsinghua’s new institute marks a push to industrialize embodied AI in China
- Embodied AI, AI that controls physical robots and learns from real-world interactions, is moving from labs to factory floors. Robot Era raised $141 million 1. Geely Capital led the round. It is the investment arm of automaker Geely. BAIC Capital joined. It is the investment arm of state-owned automaker BAIC Group. TARS secured $120 million led by Lanchi Ventures and Qiming Venture Partners, both venture capital firms 2.
- Campuses are posting tenders for embodied robots. Xijing College budgeted 1 million yuan 3. Yangtze University awarded 2.15 million yuan for 21 embodied intelligent robots 4. Qingdao University set aside 928,000 yuan 5.
- The timing fits China’s “year of mass production” for humanoid robots. Robot Era delivered over 200 units in 2025 with hundreds more in production 6. Academic pushes match commercial readiness.
Hardware and sensor suppliers should track university procurement cycles to capture near-term sales opportunities
- Component makers can watch campus buying. Yangtze University’s tender listed 21 embodied intelligent robots and sensor-integrated mobile platforms, wheeled robot bases with onboard sensors 4. Sunshine College issued a tender for embodied robot procurement 7.
- Vendors that build sensing hardware and software can target this surge. Saigan Intelligence says its multi-modal sensor approach combines cameras, Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) and other sensors 8. It is gaining “leading customers” and moving into products.
- Bid specs give clear signals. Documents list required certifications and delivery timelines, typically 30 days post-contract 5. Budgets run from 928,000 to 2.15 million yuan per school 45.
