Trump’s tariffs: uncertainty hits US robotics firms

The new 145% tariff on Chinese imports has created significant uncertainty for US robotics firms that rely on these components.

Jeff Cardenas, CEO of Texas-based robotics firm Apptronik, said that while the company assembles robots in the US, it still sources materials from China.

“We’re trying to understand the landscape, but it’s changing by the day,” he said.

As the US robotics sector navigates the impact of these tariffs, experts warn that rising costs and supply chain disruptions could hinder the industry’s global competitiveness.

The ongoing uncertainty now threatens to make it more difficult for the US to lead in the global race for robotics innovation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China’s robotics dominance results from decade-long strategic investment

China’s rapid rise in robotics wasn’t accidental but the result of deliberate government strategy and sustained investment.

The country has transformed from relying on imports to becoming the global leader, increasing its share of global industrial robot installations from just 14% in 2013 to 52% by 2022 1.

This robotics push was formalized as a critical component of China’s “Made in China 2025” manufacturing initiative, creating comprehensive support for the industry’s development 1.

The strategy has yielded remarkable results, with China now ranking third globally in robot density at 470 robots per 10,000 employees in 2023, surpassing both Germany and Japan 2.

Chinese companies like Inovance and Siasun have dramatically expanded their market share, reducing dependency on foreign robotics technology while building domestic expertise 1.

This strategic approach has given China significant advantages in manufacturing critical components like actuators and vision systems mentioned in the original article.

2️⃣ Previous tech tariffs show predictable patterns of industry disruption

The current tariff situation mirrors previous rounds that significantly disrupted tech supply chains and hurt American competitiveness.
