Trump’s tariffs: Thailand to negotiate with US on April 21
Thailand will hold negotiations with US officials next week regarding a proposed 36% tariff on its goods.
The delegation, led by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, is scheduled to meet with US trade representatives in Washington on April 21, according to a government statement.
The Thai government aims to present strategies for addressing its US$46 billion trade surplus with the US and strengthening bilateral economic relations.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has indicated that the tariff could reduce Thailand’s economic growth by at least one percentage point this year if not addressed.
In response, Thailand is willing to increase imports of US goods – including agricultural products, energy resources, and other commodities. The country is also working to reduce import duties.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The 200-year trade relationship provides context for high-stakes negotiations
Thailand’s diplomatic urgency stems from a relationship that spans nearly two centuries, dating back to the 1833 Treaty of Amity and Commerce, the first U.S. treaty with an Asian nation 1.
This long-standing partnership has evolved significantly, with Thailand’s trade surplus more than doubling to $46 billion during Trump’s first term, making it a prime target for reciprocal tariffs 2.
The economic stakes are exceptionally high for Thailand. University studies suggest potential losses of $8-10 billion, which could reduce GDP growth by up to 2 percentage points 3.
These projections help explain why Thailand is assembling a high-level delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, reflecting the gravity with which Thai officials view these negotiations.
The historical relationship may provide diplomatic leverage in talks, but the substantial trade imbalance presents a significant challenge in the current administration’s approach to trade policy.
2️⃣ Thailand’s trade proposition reveals the regional complexity of US-China tensions
Thailand’s negotiation strategy highlights the complicated position of Southeast Asian economies caught between U.S. and Chinese economic forces.
While Thailand’s trade surplus with the U.S. has increased to $46 billion, its trade deficit with China simultaneously ballooned to $45 billion, nearly matching amounts flowing in opposite directions 4.
