Trump’s media firm, Crypto.com plan $1b digital asset treasury

Trump Media and Technology Group, which runs the Truth Social platform, announced plans to launch a digital asset treasury firm in partnership with Crypto.com and a blank check company backed by Yorkville Advisors.

The new entity, called Trump Media CRO Strategy, will hold CRO, a token issued by Crypto.com.

Trump Media said it intends to purchase US$105 million in CRO, while Yorkville projected the company’s treasury could reach US$1 billion in CRO, plus US$420 million in cash and a US$5 billion line of credit.

The move reflects a growing trend of companies adding cryptocurrency holdings to their balance sheets.

Trump Media also plans to introduce a rewards program on Truth Social using Crypto.com’s digital wallet infrastructure.

CRO’s price rose about 30% after the announcement, but remains below its 2021 peak.

Trump Media has expanded its cryptocurrency activities as interest in digital assets continues across various industries.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Digital asset treasury companies have emerged as a $100 billion trend

Trump Media’s $105 million CRO purchase reflects a broader corporate strategy that has gained significant momentum across industries.

Digital Asset Treasury Companies (DATCOs) now collectively hold over $100 billion in digital assets, with publicly traded companies raising more than $15 billion through these initiatives in recent months12.

These companies have found a unique capital advantage, trading at an average premium of 64% to their net asset value, allowing them to raise funds above their actual crypto holdings and use proceeds to buy more digital assets3.

The model originated with MicroStrategy’s bitcoin strategy starting in 2020, but has since expanded beyond bitcoin to include various tokens like Ethereum1.

However, this reflexive growth model creates vulnerability during market downturns, as companies become dependent on continued equity issuance to fund their crypto purchases3.

2️⃣ Trump’s crypto ventures coincide with sweeping regulatory changes
