US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss an agreement on September 19 that could allow TikTok to continue operating in the US and address ongoing trade tensions.

The call would mark the first known direct conversation between the two leaders in three months, according to US officials.

China has not confirmed plans for the call.

Congress has ordered TikTok to be shut down for American users by January 2025 if its US assets are not sold by ByteDance, its Chinese parent.

Trump has not enforced the law while his administration seeks a buyer, due to concerns about backlash from TikTok’s large user base and possible disruption of political communications.

Sources told Reuters that any deal would transfer TikTok’s US assets to American owners but may still rely on ByteDance’s algorithm, raising concerns among some lawmakers about possible spying and influence operations.

Trade talks between the two countries also remain unresolved, with issues including tariffs, technology restrictions, and agricultural purchases still in discussion.
