Trump urges Intel CEO to resign over China ties

President Donald Trump has called for the immediate resignation of Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, citing conflicts of interest over his reported investments in Chinese companies.

Tan, who became CEO in March 2025, has faced scrutiny for past investments in businesses linked to China’s military, concerns also raised in a letter from Republican Senator Tom Cotton to Intel’s board.

Intel, which has received billions from the US government to boost domestic chip manufacturing, said it remains committed to US national security and continued engagement with the administration.

Shares of Intel fell over 3% after Trump’s remarks.

A White House spokesperson said Trump is committed to ensuring American companies in cutting-edge sectors are led by people the public can trust.

Tan was not indicted in past legal actions involving Cadence Design Systems, where a subsidiary pleaded guilty to violating US export controls.

He recently said the company would reduce manufacturing investments in line with customer demand after cutting thousands of jobs this year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Presidential targeting of private executives marks unprecedented intervention

Trump’s demand for Intel’s CEO to resign represents an extraordinary escalation in presidential interference with private companies.

While the Trump administration was characterized by unprecedented staff turnover and targeting of officials, even by Trump’s standards, “the demand that the leader of a private company resign is extraordinary,” according to industry experts1.

This intervention goes beyond typical presidential criticism of business leaders, moving into direct demands for corporate governance changes at a privately-held company.

Intel’s situation is complicated by its unique position as both a private company and a critical national security asset, making presidential intervention more consequential than typical corporate disputes.

2️⃣ Intel’s strategic importance amplifies national security implications

The controversy over Tan’s leadership comes at a critical juncture when Intel’s recovery is essential for U.S. semiconductor independence.
