Trump signs executive order to create single national AI rule
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a single national framework for AI regulation, preempting state-level rules.
The order, signed in Washington on December 11, 2025 aims to give the federal government authority over AI regulations, limiting the role of individual states such as California and New York.
Trump was joined at the signing by White House AI and cryptocurrency czar David Sacks, tech investor Chamath Palihapitiya, Senator Ted Cruz, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
The order directs the attorney general to create an AI Litigation Task Force to challenge state AI laws, and sets conditions for states to access funding from the US$42.5 billion Broadband Equity Access and Deployment program.
States that do not comply with the federal rules could face funding restrictions.
The Commerce Department has 90 days to clarify eligibility details for this funding.
