Trump says Xi approved TikTok US deal in phone call

US President Donald Trump said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the future of TikTok in a phone call.

Trump claimed both leaders approved a deal for TikTok’s US operations, which would see a group of US investors, reportedly including Oracle, take over the business.

TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, faces a US law requiring it to divest its American business or risk a ban.

China’s Xinhua news agency said it welcomes negotiations but did not explicitly endorse the deal.

A major issue is whether TikTok’s recommendation algorithm would remain controlled by ByteDance or transfer to US ownership.

ByteDance said it will follow relevant laws to keep TikTok available in the US but did not confirm a sale.

Some US lawmakers remain concerned about potential Chinese influence if ByteDance technology stays part of TikTok’s US operations.
