Trump says TikTok could ‘die’ as talks drag on

US President Donald Trump said on September 14, that the deadline for TikTok to be sold or banned could be extended again.

Speaking to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump said negotiations over TikTok are ongoing, and suggested that letting the app “die” is still an option.

“We may let it die, or we may, I don’t know, it depends, up to China,” Trump added. “It doesn’t matter too much. I’d like to do it for the kids.”

His comments came as US and Chinese officials met in Madrid for the fourth round of trade talks, which included discussions about TikTok.

TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, has about 170 million users in the US.

US law, signed by then-President Biden and upheld by the Supreme Court, requires ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US company or shut it down by January 19, 2026, citing national security concerns.

Trump, who tried to ban TikTok in 2020, has already postponed this deadline three times.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Political uncertainty on tech bans creates substantial economic disruption for businesses

  • Trump’s wavering position on the TikTok deadline reflects the massive economic stakes involved, with over 1.925 billion users globally and significant business dependencies on the platform2.
  • The app has generated approximately €3.5 billion in revenue for small to medium businesses in Europe alone, supporting over 51,100 jobs in key markets2.
  • Experts predict that businesses heavily integrated with TikTok could experience revenue declines and be forced to shift to more expensive marketing alternatives if a ban proceeds2.
  • This uncertainty forces companies to develop contingency plans and diversify their technology suppliers, as seen in broader discussions about navigating the challenges of tech bans3.
  • The repeated deadline extensions since Trump took office demonstrate how political considerations often override initial policy positions when economic consequences become clear.

The TikTok saga illustrates the escalating pattern of technology becoming a geopolitical battleground

  • TikTok’s journey from controversy to near-ban mirrors broader US-China tech tensions, with national security concerns now routinely cited for restricting Chinese technology companies4.
  • The app previously faced bans in India in 2019 over content concerns, affecting its 119 million users there, showing how regulatory actions can quickly eliminate major market presence5.
  • Internal documents from 2019 revealed TikTok censored content sensitive to Beijing, including references to Tiananmen Square, highlighting how Chinese ownership creates ongoing security concerns67.
  • The current situation represents what experts describe as part of a broader “tech cold war” that hinders international collaboration and creates a fragmented digital landscape4.
  • The fact that US and Chinese officials are now discussing TikTok alongside trade talks in Madrid demonstrates how individual app policies have become matters of bilateral diplomacy1.
