Trump says Apple to partner with Intel on US chips

US President Donald Trump said on June 18 that Apple has agreed to work with Intel on chips in the US.

But reported details so far point only to a preliminary manufacturing agreement, not a publicly disclosed chip design partnership.

The arrangement would give Apple another US supply option beyond TSMC. TSMC currently manufactures chips for Apple and other tech companies.

Apple has already committed to buy more than 100 million advanced chips from TSMC’s Arizona facility for future US production.

For Intel, a US chipmaker, the deal could help validate its foundry business. Intel’s foundry unit still counts Intel itself as its only significant customer, even as its 18A manufacturing process enters production.

The reported tie-up also fits a broader US industrial policy push. The US government took a 9.9% stake in Intel and previously backed the company with US$8.5 billion in grants and US$11 billion in loans, although the conditions attached to that equity position remain unclear.
