Trump plans tariffs on imported chips
Former US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imported computer chips and semiconductors.
He said these tariffs aim to bolster domestic production and would be implemented “in the near future.”
Trump criticized the Biden administration’s Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act and called the incentives “ridiculous.”
Trump proposed higher tariffs, said they should be “much bigger” than the current 2.5% rate, although he did not specify an exact figure.
Reports warned that these tariffs could raise consumer prices for technology products, including laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, and smartphones.
It remains uncertain how Trump’s proposed policies would affect semiconductor facilities under the CHIPS Act, which have already attracted over US$30 billion in private sector investments.
