Trump orders six-month phase-out of Anthropic’s Claude
President Donald Trump ordered a six-month federal phase-out of Anthropic’s AI tool Claude.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth barred contractors, suppliers, or partners that do business with the US military from commercial activity with Anthropic.
The AI startup said it would challenge the ban in court and argued the Pentagon lacked statutory authority.
Government contracting and technology attorneys said the administration’s authority was unclear, as the DoD Supply Chain Risk Authority and federal laws require steps the government had not shown it took.
Attorneys warned contractors reliant on Pentagon work were likely removing Anthropic from supply chains to protect contracts.
Defense contractor Lockheed Martin said it would follow the president and expected minimal impact. General Dynamics, RTX, and L3Harris declined to comment.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The ban on Claude stems from a standoff over ethical red lines
- The dispute started after Anthropic rejected Pentagon requests to drop limits that bar use of its AI for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons 1.
- Defense secretary Pete Hegseth warned Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to permit “unrestricted military use” or face severe consequences 2.
- Talks between the Trump administration and Anthropic fell apart, then President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic technology at once. Separately, OpenAI said it reached an agreement with the Pentagon to provide AI to classified US military networks 1.
- OpenAI said its Pentagon deal included safeguards against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, yet the administration penalized Anthropic for keeping similar limits 1.
The Pentagon’s ban coincided with a surge in Claude’s popularity
- The effort to sideline Anthropic seems to have failed in consumer markets, since the company’s ethics stance drew broad support 3.
- Claude reached No 1 on Apple’s US chart for top free apps on Saturday, moving ahead of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as Anthropic cited “unprecedented demand” 3.
- Anthropic reported free active users grew by more than 60% this year. Daily signups quadrupled, while paid subscribers more than doubled 3.
- A public ethics stance can turn into a market edge, even when it costs a government contract, and can lift consumer adoption 3.
