Trump, Musk feud grows with contract threats, impeachment

US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk’s  feud exploded June 6, with sharp threats and public fallout.

Trump slammed Musk during an Oval Office meeting and later threatened on Truth Social to cut government contracts with his companies, saying it could save “billions.”

Musk fired back by endorsing a post on X calling for Trump’s impeachment, a major shift from their once-friendly ties.

The clash appears tied to Musk’s opposition to Trump’s recent tax and spending bill.

Musk also warned that Trump’s trade tariffs could trigger a recession.

In a retaliatory move, Musk suggested he might decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which is vital to US space missions.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Government contract interdependence creates national security vulnerabilities

Musk’s companies have received approximately $38 billion in government contracts, loans, and subsidies, with SpaceX alone securing nearly $20 billion in federal contracts since 2008 1.

This dependency creates significant national security implications. SpaceX’s Dragon is currently the only U.S. spacecraft capable of transporting astronauts to the International Space Station, with no immediate alternatives available 2.

The threat to decommission Dragon spacecraft in response to political conflict highlights how critical infrastructure has become entangled with individual business relationships, potentially jeopardizing essential government functions.

The military and NASA’s reliance on SpaceX is particularly significant, as the company holds over $5 billion in Pentagon contracts and $15 billion in NASA contracts that are crucial for national security and space exploration operations 3.

This situation demonstrates the potential dangers when governments become dependent on private companies that are vulnerable to personal political disputes.

2️⃣ Market reactions reveal investor concerns about political risk

Tesla’s stock plummeted 14.3% following Trump’s threats, resulting in approximately $151 billion in market value erased in a single day—marking the company’s largest single-day decline in its history 4.
