Trump Mobile slammed over ‘made in US’ claims

The origins of the Trump Mobile T1 smartphone, priced at US$499, are under scrutiny.

Analysts have raised concerns regarding its claim of being “proudly designed and built in the United States,” suggesting that overseas production is likely involved.

The T1 features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, a fingerprint sensor with facial recognition, and a 50-megapixel main camera.

However, Amoled panels are exclusively produced in Asia, with China, South Korea, and Vietnam being major manufacturers, according to Joy Guo, principal analyst at Omdia’s displays group.

The device is offered with a subscription plan, the “47 Plan,” costing US$47.45 per month.

Experts, including Robin Wang from Runto, believe the first batch of T1 phones is unlikely to be produced domestically.

Trump Mobile and the identified manufacturers did not respond to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The economic reality behind “made in America” smartphones

The stark price difference between Trump’s $499 T1 phone and Purism’s $1,999 Liberty Phone, the only documented American-made smartphone, reveals the economic challenges of domestic manufacturing.

Manufacturing smartphones in the US comes with a substantial cost premium, as evidenced by Purism’s struggle to establish a domestic supply chain while maintaining 90% of materials sourced from North America and Europe 1.

Even with domestic assembly, key components like AMOLED screens are exclusively manufactured in Asia, with production split between South Korean and Chinese manufacturers 2.

The economics simply don’t align with the T1’s price point, explaining why Purism’s CEO Todd Weaver called the Trump phone “classic vapourware” if it claims both US manufacturing and a $499 price tag 2.

This trend is common across the tech industry, where marketing claims about manufacturing origin often conflict with the complex reality of global supply chains and component availability.
