Trump halts Biden’s $5b EV charging station program
The Trump administration has instructed US states to stop spending from a US$5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program for EV charging stations, launched under Biden.
On Feb. 6, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced the suspension, with associate administrator Emily Biondi said that the new leadership will review the program’s policies.
All NEVI guidance documents are rescinded, and state EV deployment plans are on hold until further notice.
While reimbursements for existing commitments will continue, no new obligations are allowed.
As of last year, nine states had 31 operational NEVI charging stations, featuring a total of 126 public charging ports.
The program supports up to 80% of eligible costs, but FHWA has removed online resources that detailed the initiative.
