Trump denies involvement in $500m Abu Dhabi crypto stake

President Donald Trump denied knowledge of a deal involving his family and an Abu Dhabi royal to sell a stake in a cryptocurrency firm, according to Bloomberg.

The deal, reportedly negotiated four days before Trump’s inauguration, involved Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s emissaries purchasing a 49% stake in World Liberty Financial for US$500 million, with an initial payment of US$250 million.

Of this, US$187 million was directed to Trump family entities, while the rest went to entities linked to co-founders of the firm and associates.

Trump said he was unaware of the transaction and indicated his family is handling their investments.

A spokesperson for World Liberty Financial confirmed neither Trump nor Steve Witkoff, a co-founder, had involvement in the deal since Trump took office, and emphasized the company made the transaction independently.

The deal has raised questions due to Sheikh Tahnoon’s diplomatic ties and his role in a major investment firm.

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The royal tied to the crypto deal is also pushing the UAE’s AI chip request

  • Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, linked to the crypto firm deal, serves as the UAE’s national security adviser and chairs G42, the state-owned AI company 1.
  • G42 says talks with the US Department of Commerce over export licenses for advanced Nvidia chips have dragged on, and Sheikh Tahnoon plus G42 leaders have made repeated trips to Washington this year to argue for approval 2.
  • Commerce Department staff have held back approval for Nvidia AI chip shipments to the UAE due to security worries, including concerns that China could get indirect access through G42 to advanced semiconductors 3.
  • G42 says it built safeguards to prevent diversion or misuse. It ended business relationships with Chinese firms in November 2023, and says its UAE data centers rely on Western-made hardware plus controls that include Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 encryption and physical separation of compute systems 2.

Geopolitics now shapes who gets advanced AI chips

  • The deal captures how the UAE is using capital and political ties to pursue access to US technology, including advanced AI chips, as Washington applies tougher scrutiny 1.
  • US officials have tied access to advanced Nvidia chips to security assurances that keep the technology from being routed to geopolitical rivals such as China 2.
  • This approach turns chip supply from a straightforward sale into a test of geopolitical alignment for companies and sovereign funds.
  • G42 says it has tried to meet US expectations through what it calls “gold-standard” security steps and by ending ties with Chinese firms, as national security concerns reshape AI infrastructure and semiconductor supply chains 2.
