Trump crypto venture faces backlash over freeze claims
World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture co-founded by US President Donald Trump is facing investor backlash after billionaire backer Justin Sun accused it of secretly building controls that let insiders freeze token holders’ funds.
The firm also borrowed US$75 million in stablecoins using its own tokens as collateral.
Critics warned the token-backed borrowing and planned unlock of 80% of early holdings could increase selling pressure and liquidation risk if prices fall further.
World Liberty said it had repaid US$25 million of the loan and is not near liquidation, even as WLFI remains sharply below last year’s levels.
Sun also alleged his wallet was blacklisted in 2025, while World Liberty earlier passed a proposal that could reduce early investors’ voting power.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The loan’s details raise conflict-of-interest questions and contributed to withdrawal constraints
- The US$75 million loan raised related-party transaction concerns that, in traditional finance, would usually require disclosure and independent board approval 1.
- Dolomite, the platform World Liberty used for the loan, has a co-founder, Corey Caplan, who also serves as an advisor to World Liberty Financial 1.
- The move drove the Dolomite USD1 pool utilization rate to about 93%, which made quick withdrawals harder for regular depositors in that pool 1.
- Some WLFI investors have complained about locked tokens, though WLFI’s original sale documents warned tokens could remain locked indefinitely, and any unlock would require a governance vote that could not happen until at least 12 months after the token sale 2.
Centralized controls and governance frictions in a DeFi-branded project
- Critics have raised concerns about centralized control in WLFI’s setup, including allegations of smart-contract functionality, meaning code-based rules in the token system, that could freeze wallets 3.
- A draft governance post on an investor unlock schedule includes an anti-dump idea that would slow future vesting, or the staged release of tokens, for investors who exceed a sell-limit, though it remains a draft rather than an adopted policy 4.
- The dispute adds to tension between crypto projects and their investors.
- Some community posts call vesting and unlock schedules “fake governance” and have threatened legal action over long lockups, which ties into a broader investor backlash 25.
