Trump criticizes EU’s $139.8m fine on Musk’s X
US President Donald Trump criticized the European Union’s €120 million (US$139.73 million) fine against X, Elon Musk’s social media company, calling it “a nasty one” during a White House event on December 8.
Trump questioned the justification for the penalty and said he expected to receive a full report on the situation later that day.
He also said Musk had not called him to ask for help on the issue and warned that “Europe has to be very careful.”

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
EU fines X over DSA breaches with fix-it deadlines
- The €120 million penalty covers three breaches 1. X turned the blue check into a paid perk without real verification, which misled people and fueled scams 1. The ad repository omits ad content and payers, which hinders public scrutiny 1. X also blocks eligible researchers from public data 1.
- X must fix these issues within EU deadlines, or face periodic penalties 21. This is the first DSA non-compliance decision, with enforcement triggered after X refused to comply while TikTok secured commitments 2.
- DSA transparency rules for Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) form the legal basis 3. X qualified in 2023 with over 45 million monthly EU users, and the Commission moved to fines after failed cooperation 32.
Vendors can sell compliance tools to 24+ designated platforms on fast timelines
- All VLOPs as well as Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs) must run ad libraries and open data to researchers 41. They must also curb dark patterns such as misleading badges 41. The list includes YouTube at 416.6 million users and Facebook at 259 million 4. Amazon Store reaches 181.3 million 4.
- Vendors with ad transparency tools, researcher API builds, or dark pattern risk controls can target this group 523. The platforms had four months from designation to implement DSA duties, yet probes into Meta and others still run 352.
- Investors can back firms that supply DSA infrastructure for complaints with Digital Service Coordinators across EU states 6. The shift to enforcement will drive steady demand for compliance services 2.
