Trump claims US in trade talks with China as Beijing denies
United States President Donald Trump said on April 24, 2025 that his administration is involved in trade negotiations with China.
This statement follows Beijing’s dismissal of claims regarding ongoing discussions and its demand for the US to revoke all unilateral tariffs.
During a meeting with Norway’s prime minister, Trump responded to a reporter’s inquiry about the Chinese government’s denial.
He said, “They had a meeting this morning.”
He did not specify which officials were involved, saying, “It doesn’t matter who ‘they’ is. We may reveal it later, but they had meetings this morning, and we’ve been meeting with China.”

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The pendulum of US-China trade relations follows historical patterns
The current trade tensions echo historical patterns in US-China commercial relations dating back over two centuries.
Since the first American ship “Empress of China” sailed to Canton in 1784, the relationship has alternated between periods of engagement and conflict, including complete trade cessation during the early Communist era from 1949-1971 1.
Today’s disagreement over the existence of negotiations mirrors previous diplomatic disconnects, where fundamental differences in expectations have repeatedly challenged bilateral trade.
The pattern of American unilateral tariffs as leverage against China has historical precedent, with tariffs and trade conditions being imposed during multiple eras. This historical context shows that trade tensions between the two nations have never been solely about economics but invariably involve complex questions of sovereignty, respect, and power dynamics.
2️⃣ Trade war escalation reveals asymmetric economic vulnerabilities
The current standoff exposes different economic vulnerabilities for both nations despite their deep interdependence.
The US imports approximately $433.7 billion from China while exporting just $178.7 billion, creating a significant trade imbalance that shapes negotiating leverage 2.
