Trump-backed American Bitcoin raises $220m for crypto mining

American Bitcoin, a bitcoin mining firm backed by Eric Trump and Donald Trump, has raised US$220 million to invest in bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining equipment.

The funding was disclosed in a recent filing by Hut 8, the majority owner of the company.

The funds were raised through the issuance and sale of over 11 million new shares to private investors.

Around US$10 million worth of shares were sold in exchange for bitcoin, priced at US$104,000 per bitcoin.

After fees, the company reported net proceeds of about US$215 million, intended for strategic investments. This includes the purchase of bitcoin and mining equipment.

American Bitcoin was launched in March following a partnership between Hut 8 and American Data Centers.

The firm plans to go public in the second half of the year through a SPAC merger with Gryphon Digital Mining. It will trade on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol ABTC.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Bitcoin mining’s evolution from hobbyists to institutional players

American Bitcoin’s US$220 million raise highlights the dramatic transformation of Bitcoin mining from a hobbyist activity to an institutional business requiring significant capital.

Bitcoin mining has become increasingly professionalized, with the global cryptocurrency mining market projected to grow from $2.2 billion in 2024 to US$3.3 billion by 2030, representing a 6.9% compound annual growth rate 1.

The industry has consolidated around large corporate players as electricity costs (representing up to 80% of operational expenses) and specialized hardware requirements have created substantial barriers to entry for individual miners 2.

US companies have emerged as global mining leaders following regulatory crackdowns in other jurisdictions, with America now controlling over 36% of global Bitcoin hash rate 3.

This massive fundraising follows the industry pattern of vertical integration, where mining companies not only operate equipment but also accumulate Bitcoin as treasury assets, reflecting a strategic approach beyond mere transaction processing.
