Trump-backed American Bitcoin posts another loss
American Bitcoin, a Miami-based bitcoin miner backed by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., posted a second straight quarterly loss in the first quarter as the value of its bitcoin holdings fell.
Net loss widened to US$82 million from US$59 million in the previous quarter.
Revenue dropped about 20% to US$62 million due to lower average revenue per bitcoin mined.
The company said it increased its bitcoin holdings by about 30% to roughly 1,600 bitcoin during the quarter.
Its shares have fallen almost 90% from their peak since listing on Nasdaq in September.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
American Bitcoin runs without debt but has little cash on hand
- American Bitcoin has no debt, yet it still carries US$580.7 million in total liabilities against US$1.2 billion in assets 1.
- Cash is tight because US$8.9 million in short-term assets does not cover US$111.6 million in short-term liabilities 1.
- That setup backs a high-risk plan to keep stacking bitcoin. The company is focused only on bitcoin mining. Its majority owner, Hut 8, has also worked in AI and High-Performance Computing (HPC), which provides large-scale computing power for AI and other demanding workloads 23.
Losses leave the company betting against miners moving into AI
- In the last 18 months, at least eight public bitcoin miners announced plans to move partly or fully into AI (Bitfarms / Core Scientific / Riot / IREN / TeraWulf / CleanSpark / Bit Digital / MARA Holdings / Cipher Mining) 3.
- They are chasing better margins plus steadier multi-year AI/HPC contracts to cut mining risk after the 2024 halving cut rewards in half and lower Bitcoin prices added pressure 3.
- More than 15,000 BTC were sold as some public miners paid for AI infrastructure expansion, with more selling possible 4.
- American Bitcoin is taking the opposite route by adding to its bitcoin holdings, testing whether a mining-only model can still work while peers lower risk 2.
