The Trump administration said on July 22 that it would provide more than US$5 billion for the Genesis Mission, an AI (AI)-for-science effort across more than 15 federal agencies.

The program aims to support chronic disease research, speed up drug development, and develop more durable materials using government supercomputers, AI models, and datasets.

White House documents for the Genesis Mission say the effort is subject to appropriations and do not show how much of the US$5 billion is new funding versus existing agency commitments.

The program also appears separate from the National Science Foundation (NSF)-led National AI Research Resource, which already provides researchers with compute, datasets, and models and has supported more than 600 research projects.

Available Genesis documents do not say it will replace that effort.

The administration is also advancing a draft Office of Management and Budget (OMB) rule that could make peer review advisory and give final say on discretionary grants to senior political appointees.

That push comes amid litigation over proposed caps on universities’ indirect-cost reimbursements.

Microsoft’s support for Genesis is aimed at US Department of Energy (DOE) work and national labs, with US$20 million in engineering help on top of US$40 million in cloud credits.
