Trump administration plans tighter chip limits on China

The Trump administration is reportedly planning to extend semiconductor restrictions on China, continuing actions initiated under Biden.

Officials from Japan and the Netherlands are discussing proposals to block engineers from Tokyo Electron Ltd. and ASML Holding NV from servicing chip-making equipment in China.

The administration is also considering tighter regulations on Nvidia’s chip exports and potential sanctions against Chinese firms to curb advancements in AI and military technology.

Key officials support limiting exports of high-powered Nvidia chips and reducing the number of GPUs that can be shipped without licenses.

Discussions with international partners are revisiting past goals, including limiting maintenance services for semiconductor equipment in China.

The administration is also reviewing the AI diffusion rule, considering adjustments to lower export limits on computing power. These measures could take months to finalize but signal a stronger push to restrict China’s technological progress.
