Trump admin said to take equity stake in ex-Intel CEO’s chip startup

The Trump administration has agreed to inject up to US$150 million in XLight, a startup led by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing the US Commerce Department.

The government will take an equity stake in the company as part of the agreement.

Further details about XLight’s business or the timeline for the investment have not been disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

XLight bets on FELs for ASML EUV tools

  • The company plans to sell particle-accelerator-driven free-electron lasers (FELs, electron-beam devices that generate tunable light) for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography to replace the laser-produced plasma sources in ASML’s EUV scanners; it will not replace scanners 1.
  • Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger leads XLight and said “Building an energy-efficient EUV laser with tenfold improvements over today’s technology will drive the next era of Moore’s Law (the historical trend of packing more transistors onto chips), accelerating fab productivity, while developing a critical domestic capability” 2.
  • The first FEL system is underway at the Albany Nanotech Complex (a semiconductor R&D hub), with six Department of Energy (DOE) labs 2.
  • A $150 million Letter of Intent (a preliminary, nonbinding notice) is the first from the Trump administration’s Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Research and Development Office, which signals priority on next-generation lithography 2.

What investors and suppliers should watch

  • The Wall Street Journal via Reuters said the Trump administration will invest up to $150 million in XLight and take equity; timing and structure remain undisclosed 3.
  • Separately, XLight said it signed a $150 million Letter of Intent with the Commerce Department for proposed CHIPS Act incentives; it is not a finalized award 2.
  • The company closed a $40 million Series B led by Playground Global (a venture capital firm) 1.
  • Accelerator suppliers can target partnerships as XLight scales toward production; targets include superconducting radio-frequency (RF) cavities and cryomodules (vacuum-insulated cryogenic housings for accelerator components) developed with Fermilab (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory) 4.
