TrueMoney Philippines to cease operations
TrueMoney Philippines, a Philippine digital payments and remittance company, said on April 30 that it will fully cease commercial operations in the country as part of a planned market exit.
In a social media post, the company said it had spent the past decade offering services including digital payments, cash in and cash out, remittances, mobile top-ups, lending, as well as insurance.
TrueMoney Philippines also said it had served more than 5 million customers and over 20,000 SMEs, and that it is carrying out an orderly wind-down of operations.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A regional fintech brand is making a planned exit from the Philippine market
- TrueMoney Philippines is part of Ascend Money, a digital financial services company backed by Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group and Ant Financial, Alibaba’s fintech affiliate 1.
- TrueMoney runs operations across Southeast Asia. Its offices are in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. It also operates in Myanmar, Indonesia, and the Philippines 2.
- In the Philippines, TrueMoney worked with remittance companies including Western Union and WorldRemit, a UK-based digital money transfer company 34.
- In 2018, money sent through WorldRemit could be picked up at more than 14,000 TrueMoney Centers nationwide, said TrueMoney 4.
The move captures how hard it is to sustain a remittance and agent network model
- The Philippines is one of the world’s largest remittance recipients. Western Union cited World Bank data that placed the country fourth in 2019 3.
- Western Union and WorldRemit relied on TrueMoney’s network for cash collection in the Philippines. After the exit, they may need new local partners to keep similar cash pick-up coverage 34.
- The departure offers a warning for foreign fintech firms expanding in Southeast Asia.
- Backing from CP Group and Ant Financial did not guarantee a durable position. A large agent network alone may not be enough in crowded, price-sensitive markets 1.
